Description:
Andrea Bocelli's new album "Incanto", released worldwide on October 24th, 2008, reveals the great tenor's love of timeless Italian popular songs. The title (meaning "enchantment" in English) is evocative of the enchanting appeal and delight of a glorious tradition in lyrics, songs and shared experiences.

This is the artist's tribute to the music that he has loved since childhood, his gift to the millions of people all around the world who share his passion and an unforgettable celebration of his fiftieth birthday.

In a world of where change occurs in the blink of an eye and a world of incredible inventions, where novelty is what counts most and traditions are constantly revisited, the popular Italian song reveals one of its most contemporary and precious qualities: continuity. Stability and a comforting familiarity form the foundation of a repertoire that reaches straight for the heart and places love above all.

Incanto has all the attributes to become a worldwide hit. Andrea Bocelli has chosen fourteen gems of Italian songwriting, brilliant orchestration and a warm sound, which come together in the perfect recipe in this new album.

Andrea Bocelli discovered the songs of the Neapolitan and Sicilian repertoires when he was a child, learning by heart what he heard performed by the great artists of the era and including these songs among those performed during family get-togethers.

He also listened to famous albums by Mario Lanza before discovering that Italy's most illustrious tenors, Beniamino Gigli, Mario Del Monaco, Franco Corelli and Enrico Caruso, had all recorded popular songs. During his career, Bocelli has sung Italian songs with great sentimentalism, cultivating the art and stirring the hearts of the public with the great emotive frankness of his performances.

What is the soul of Incanto? “As with many other of my albums, here too, love takes absolute centre stage”, is the singer's reply. “All of these songs are in fact love songs. But there are also other elements which must not be eclipsed, such as the celebration of the sun and the sea in ’O sole mio and A marechiare, for instance. Many of these songs speak of these two physical elements, which are often the source of our passions. In a certain sense, the sun and the sea create the fertile ground in which love may blossom. And when there's love, there's also hope and optimism”.

What Bocelli is interested in, naturally, is the final equation, that perfectly balanced alchemy of pathos and sentiment tangible in Incanto. The tenor has no doubts about the lasting value of Italian song and of the unique quality of its fusion between love, hope and optimism. “As I often say, my dream as an artist is to convey emotions similar to those I received from the great singers of the past to the people listening to my records”. Bocelli continues "I'm running the risk of seeming repetitive, but this music has undoubtedly helped me overcome many difficult times”.

He goes on to say that the tradition of Neapolitan and Italian songs is an ideal link between the world of opera and the world of popular music, a link forged in the past by charismatic singers through whom a vast audience were able to access a lyrical repertoire teetering between disinterest and oblivion. Incanto was created to fulfill one of Andrea Bocelli's long standing dreams: to restore the tradition through this link.
